Jozo Weider Newsletter Volume 1

  • Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Dear Jozo Racing Families,

Welcome to the first Jozo Weider Volunteer Committee (JWVC) Newsletter of the 2015-16 ski season.

The Jozo Volunteer Committee will be sending out newsletters over the race season to keep all our families and athletes up to date.  Also, don’t forget to visit the Jozo website regularly through the season for updates, race results, team selection, events, Buy & Sell, and more at www.jwracers.com.

Here are a few things we think you should know.

They were making snow at Blue last weekend!!

Division 1 Racing and Provincials for U14 and U16

New Rule

Alpine Ontario (AOA) has added a new rule that ALL racers wishing to participate in Division 1 races, special event races (such as Can Ams or Whistler Cup) and the provincials must participate in an AOA approved fitness test.  Jozo has set a fitness test to be held on December 21 at Active Life Conditioning in Collingwood. Please get in touch with Rob Crossan or Nikki if you would like to participate.

What is Division 1 anyway?

For parents and athletes not familiar, at U14 and U16 there are two divisions in Ontario.  Division 1 is a more competitive level with all scoring done on an individual basis. Points are accumulated with a direct goal of qualifying for the provincials and other top races such as Can Ams. As well there are a number of mid-week competitions through the year. Division 1 racers regularly train 3 days (or more) each week and are strongly encouraged to attend "pre-season" camps in November and December.

note: Division 1 racers cannot race in a Division 2 competition.

Blue Mountain/Jozo offers an amazing Division 1 program at a fantastic price, far lower than other clubs. If your daughter or son wants a more competitive circuit then you should contact Rob Crossan to learn more.  The program includes roughly 50 days of training and racing, including pre-Christmas camp, Christmas Camp, all Friday training, all weekends, Provincials and other race days on the calendar.

Division 2

Division 2 is less competitive and has both individual and team scoring … yes, team scoring is back for 2015/16!  Athletes that place in the top 5 of a Division 2 race are eligible to enter the following Division 1 race where they may earn points towards provincials. All racers at Blue are in Division 2  (unless they specifically enrolled in the Division 1 program or are adult Masters racers). Typically our teams host one race at Blue Mt. and have 4 races at other clubs. The Division 2 schedule is set by Alpine Ontario and should be out before the

New Year. Pre Season Ski Camps

Sun Peaks

Jozo athletes are attending the Pratte International Ski Camp at Sun Peaks (Nov 28-Dec 5).  In total 23 racers signed up along with 16 parents that are chaperoning (or going to get early season powder).  JWVC will be posting information for camps in the summer and fall of 2016 on our website and in our newsletters.

Mt. Tremblant

AOA is hosting the Mt. Tremblant camp Dec 5th-10th.  This is open to all AOA athletes and is a great venue to get back in the swing of ski racing and meet other athletes from around Ontario.  Sign up for this camp directly with AOA.

Blue Mountain

If you have not already done so you should sign up for one or both of the December Jozo Race camps -  at Blue Mountain of course!  Follow this link:  http://www.bluemountain.ca/jozoracing.htm

Pre Christmas Camp runs from December 19th to 23rd

Christmas Camp runs from December 27th to 31st

Recent committee initiatives to enhance the program

  • The JWVC purchased 50 race ponchos (mumuu’s) last season.  These are shared between our racers when they are at races and used to keep warm prior to starting the race.  It can get cold in those speed suits and this investment helps everyone stay at the top of their race game.
  • We have also purchased over $3,000 worth of trophies, medals and other awards for the 2015/16 season.
  • New timing equipment for training - we are in the process of purchasing a new wireless timing system to provide coaches and racers with more access to timed training runs. This will compliment the existing Freelap watches which will continue to be used. The cost of the new system will be split with Blue Mountain.
  • Membership gifts – as in the past, all athletes that purchase a membership from the Jozo Volunteer Committee will receive a very nice bit of “swag”.
  • We are also working on a number of other initiatives that we will tell you about in the coming weeks.

Our fundraising program allows us to make these important investments for the Jozo Race program and we sincerely thank all the families who contribute through membership fees and our sponsors who make generous contributions each year.

Thank you very much from all of us on the Jozo Weider Volunteer Committee . We can’t wait for there to be enough snow to take our first few runs!

Stay tuned for more updates soon.
